Responder Devices

The mDNS Responder Devices Screen displays information about mDNS Responder Devices. The screen is also used to create, edit, and delete Responder Devices, and re-apply the configuration to a Responder Device. Responder Devices relay mDNS messages and enable the discovery of services across VLANs; and also enable you to configure and apply rules and policies to the data traffic. Service Rules, containing Server Policies and Client Policies define the criteria by which the Responder Device determines which services can be shared with which client requests. The mDNS Responder Screen is the main screen to configure the full workflow for mDNS, including creating Responder Devices, configuring linked Edge Devices, and configuring Service Rules, Server Policies, and Client Policies.

Note: The following devices can be configured as Responder Devices: OS6860, OS6865, OS6900, OS9900, running AOS 8.7R1 and higher. A switch can be configured as either a Responder Device or a Gateway Device. It cannot be configured for both. A switch cannot be configured as a Responder Device if it has already been configured as an mDNS Gateway, or as an Edge Device for another Responder.

If you want to configure a switch that has already been configured as a Gateway Device, go to the Gateway Device Screen and delete the switch. If the switch does not appear in the Gateway Device List, go to the Poll Screen and poll the switch. Then return to the Gateway Devices Screen and delete the switch.

Responder mDNS Workflow

1. Create a Responder Device.

2. Create Edge Devices for the Responder Devices.

3. Create Service Rules.

Creating a Responder Device

Click on the Add icon to bring up the Setup an mDNS Responder Screen. Complete the fields as described below, then click on the Enabled as Responder and Configure button.

The Responder Device will appear on the Responder Devices Screen. Select the device in the list and click on the Edit icon to complete the configuration.

Completing the Responder Configuration

After creating a Responder Device as described above, select the device in the Responder Devices List and click on the Edit icon, and complete the fields on the "Setup a mDNS Responder" Screen as described below to complete the setup. When you are finished click on the Apply button.

General

Edge Devices Common Configuration

Check the "Use These Common Configs For All Edge Devices Associated To This Responder" checkbox and configure the fields as described below to quickly apply these basic configurations to all selected Edge Devices.

Edge Device Selection

Click on the Add button to select Edge Devices (either AOS Switches or AP Groups). The switches/AP Groups will appear in the List of Selected Devices. If you have not created an Edge Device Common Configuration (as described above), configure Edge Device VLANs/ WLANs (SSIDs), mDNS Admin Status, and Loopback 0 IP address on individual switches/AP Groups.

Note: The following devices can be configured as Edge Devices: OS6465, OS6560, OS6860, OS6865, OS6900, and OS9900, running AOS 8.5R1 and higher; and Stellar APs running 4.0.1 and higher (except for OAW-AP1101). Only supported devices or AP Groups containing supported devices are available for selection.

Service Sharing Configuration

Service Rules specify the services that will be shared with clients. You can configure Service Sharing Rules for the Responder Device at this time or configure them later on the applicable OmniVista Screens (e.g., Service Rules, Server Policies, Client Policies). A Service Rule must contain a Server Policy and a Client Policy. Note that you must configure Service Rules to share services on the network. If there are no Service Rules configured, the Responder Device will learn all the services, but will not process any query received from an mDNS client.

To configure Service Rules now, click on the Add icon and configure Service Sharing Rules for the Responder as described below. When you are done, click on the Create button. To configure additional rules, click on the "Create Another" checkbox. A Service Rule must include a Server Policy and/or a Client Policy.

The configured rules will be displayed on the applicable screen (e.g., Service Rules, Server Policies, Client Policies), where they can be edited, deleted and any time.

Editing a Responder Device

Select a Responder Device in the list and click on the Edit icon. Complete the fields as described below and click on the Apply button.

General

Edge Devices Common Configuration

Check the "Use These Common Configs For All Edge Devices Associated To This Responder" checkbox and configure the fields as described below to quickly apply these basic configurations to all selected Edge Devices.

Edge Device Selection

Click on the Add or Edit buttons to select/deselect Edge Devices (switches or AP Groups). The switches/AP Groups will appear in the List of Selected Devices. If necessary, you can edit the VLAN's/Default WLAN (SSID) List, mDNS Admin Status, and Loopback 0 IP address on individual switches/AP Groups.

Service Sharing Configuration

If Service Rules are configured for the Edge Device, they will appear in the list. To edit a Service Rule or Server Policy, click on the Rule or Policy Name hyperlink, edit the rule or policy and click on the Apply button.

To add a Service Rule, click on the Add icon and complete the fields as described above. To delete a Service Rule, select the rule(s) and click on the Delete icon. Click OK at the Confirmation Prompt.

Deleting a Responder Device

Select a Responder Device in the Responder Device List and click on the Delete icon. Click OK at the Confirmation Prompt. Note that the following objects will be also deleted in that responder: Service Rule, Server Policy Client Policy, and related Edge Devices. When you delete a Responder Device, all mDNS configurations on the Responder Device and associated Edge Devices are set to default. Note that the following objects will be also deleted in that responder: Service Rule, Server Policy Client Policy, and related Edge Devices. When you delete a Responder Device, all mDNS configurations on the Responder Device and associated Edge Devices are set to default. Sharing Rules created by BYOD users using the UPAM Portal will not be deleted on the switch. However, this will not affect the functionality.

Re-Applying the Configuration to a Responder Device

To re-apply an existing configuration to a Responder Device, select the device in the Responder Devices List and click on the Re-Apply button at the top of the list. This will re-apply the existing OmniVista Responder configuration, overriding the current configuration. This can be used to resolve a mismatched configuration between the OmniVista and AOS.

Responder Devices List

Click on a Responder Device in the list for more detailed information, including Edge Devices and Service Rules. Click on a link in the Rules List to add, edit, or delete a Rule, Server Policy, or Client Policy.
